Tracking – are you too attached?

If we workout without a watch or other technology, does it count?

Obviously.

But….

I think what we measure can also become something relied upon. My watch measures my steps each day. I don’t consciously set a target, but I clearly pay attention to it. I recently left it at home. I usually go for short walks a couple of times throughout the day, and I realized that I actually had fleeting thoughts about ‘why should I walk if I will not be tracking it?’

I know that the surge of tracking devices on the market really does motivate people to be more active, and I think that’s a great thing.

But can we get too attached to the numbers?

I don’t have an answer and I suspect it is for each of us to decide based on our own interaction with tracking, and what it is we are tracking and why.
